Changing business models is a pressing priority for most associations. There is a strong emphasis on innovative solutions to address unique and complex challenges of the 21st century. But how do you find the resources and support to begin such a project?
ASAE wants to help you pursue innovation in your organization. The Innovation Grants Program provides awards to support innovation exploration and development in order to raise awareness and engagement in innovation efforts for the association community. Grant recipients receive $10,000 to dive deeper into innovation and get support to implement their project ideas, creating models of innovation for the entire association community. Who is eligible for the 2018 grants? It’s likely that you are! The intended audience for the Innovation Grants Program is the creative individual interfacing with the association community from all angles of the organizational spectrum. Therefore, individuals from professional or trade associations, nonprofits, association industry partners, and consulting companies that serve the association community are eligible to apply. All applicants or applicant teams must include at least one ASAE member.

The intent of this grant program is to help successfully implement new ideas. However, we understand that not every innovative idea becomes an innovation. Many fail. That’s the nature of experimentation.
Therefore, while our goal is innovation, what we’re really looking for is innovative ideas — along with a plan to apply those ideas. We’re supporting organizations and individuals to try new things.
If you are wondering whether your new program, product, service, or process qualifies as an “innovative idea,” consider these questions:
- Does it seem innovative to you?
- Do you hope it will create new opportunities or significantly improved ways of doing business?
- Does it represent a speculative venture that could succeed or fail?
- Is it new for you or your organization — and also not standard practice in the industry? (If others have tried something similar, with any degree of success, that’s okay with us, as long as it’s new and not commonplace. In fact, you might build on the concepts of innovative project you’re observing elsewhere.)
If your answer to all four questions is yes, your idea will probably sound innovative to our review committee as well. As you can see, we’re not defining this narrowly because we don’t want to limit your creativity. We encourage you to imagine what might be possible, share one of your best ideas with us, and explain to us how our funds can help you apply that idea. Whether it succeeds or fails, all of us will learn from your efforts, and these lessons learned will continue to support and encourage innovation.
When reviewing applications, we also consider:
In looking at a proposal’s potential significance, we examine how well the project plan addresses the IGP objectives — raising awareness of and engagement in innovation efforts in the association community, fostering new networks for nonprofit innovation, and creating a comprehensive body of knowledge around innovation initiatives, programs, and models. We also consider the relative importance of the organizational issues the project addresses in relation to the larger association community. We look for projects that will be significant within and across organizations and address issues that are common to similar organizations and industries.
Project Design and Practicality
The project design should state specifically the actions and process by which the project will address the underlying need and achieve the objectives. In order to evaluate the design, we must have a good sense of what you intend to do and how you intend to accomplish your tasks. We look for a vision, a plan for integration, and projected next steps that are carefully considered and clearly articulated. The methods for achieving project objectives, the desired outcomes, and the process for evaluating plan objectives should all be well-defined and understood.
Applicability and Transferability
An essential element for this program is finding projects that can serve as inspiration for other organizations and industries facing similar challenges, problems, or opportunities. IGP intends to grow innovation in the association community but also seeks to share models for innovative efforts. Therefore, we examine each proposal with regard to broader application, adaptation, and transferability.
We are looking for projects that will have long-term effects for recipient organizations and their constituents. We look for projects that can potentially shake up organizations by implementing new ideas, creating new models of engagement, and transforming organizational culture. We take into account the project’s potential for far-reaching impact and/or appeal to multiple stakeholders within and across organizations, and we consider the measurability of market benefits, need, and future demand.
In addition to the above major criteria, reviewers also look at the project’s objectives, the applicant’s potential and commitment to innovation, the clarity of the application, the project management plan and budget, and the organizational commitment and resources.

Step 1: Determine the type of grant (see FAQs) best suited to your project and the team members who will responsible for your project, and start writing your proposal!

- Proposal Abstract — (500 word limit) A succinct, yet comprehensive description of project goals and objectives, plan of work, intended outcomes, and measures of success.
- Innovation Project Plan — (2500 word limit) Should include a detailed description of the following:
- OBJECTIVES (What are the project goals and objectives?)
- SIGNIFICANCE (What is the project rationale? How is it significant and original?)
- DESIGN (What are the methods for achieving plan objectives, desired outcomes, and evaluating plan objectives?)
- APPLICABILITY and TRANSFERABILITY (How is it applicable to similar challenges within and across organizations? What can other organizations take away from this project?)
- INNOVATION (How does the project make something new, different, significantly improved, or enhanced in a creative way?)
- IMPACT (How will this project impact your organization's ability to develop and sustain a culture of innovation?)
- PRACTICALITY (Define the extent to which project objectives address cost-savings, increased efficiency of internal processes and productivity, improved employee morale, enhanced customer satisfaction, clearer communication throughout organization, or other target area for your organization.)
- Management Plan and Budget — An outline of proposed plan activities with related timelines with a budget detailing allocation of grant funds to specific plan expense items, including justification.
- Organizational Profile — A brief description of your organization, including industry type and resources available to support project objectives.
- Applicant Profile — A biographical sketch of the applicant (and each team member), including relevant expertise, commitment to innovation.
- Letter(s) of Support (Required for Travel Grant Only) — A letter from the organizational representative with whom applicant will work when engaged in travel program.
- Supplemental Materials (Optional) — Supplemental materials are not required. However, applicants are invited to submit a PowerPoint presentation (up to 5 slides), video clip (up to 3 minutes), or other supplemental material to communicate their innovation concept.

- Who is eligible to apply for the grants?
The intended audience for the Innovation Grants Program is the creative individual interfacing with the association community from all angles of the organizational spectrum. Therefore, individuals from professional or trade associations, nonprofits, association industry partners, and consulting companies that serve the association community are eligible to apply. - What types of grants are available?
IGP awards are available in three categories: travel grant, exploratory grant, and hybrid grant (combination of travel and exploration).
The objectives of the TRAVEL GRANT are to 1) enrich learning experiences about the impact, value, and application of innovation; and 2) broaden exposure to cultures of innovation. The award is intended to support association professionals who wish to pursue educational opportunities in the area of innovation, specifically by visiting organizations or institutions that have a demonstrated commitment to innovation exemplified through strategic and tactical implementation. The award would enable the recipient to engage in state-of-the-art learning opportunities about processes that promote a culture of innovation throughout an organization, and to identify ways to apply the learner outcomes to the grantee's host organization.
The objectives of the EXPLORATION GRANT are to 1) develop new or different models of innovation; and 2) employ innovation tools to enhance existing or new programmatic initiatives. The award is intended to support the exploration, development or implementation of innovative activities — including a new process, product, or business model within the grantee's host organization. The award would provide financial support to facilitate bringing to fruition an emerging member or community need, or an alternative business plan.
- Can the grant funds be used for expenses like staff training and consultants?
Yes. The key is to provide sound justification for use of grant funds for any proposed expenses in your application. You should use the budget section of your application to explain how each expense and its expected outcome will contribute to your project’s overall implementation and success.
- What is the “Letter of Intent”?
Though it is not required, you are encouraged to submit a letter declaring your intention to submit a proposal. Please see important dates and events above for deadline. The Letter of Intent should include the point of contact for your project, the contact’s title, the organization name, and the type of grant you intend to request. - Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm! You’ve found this page because you have lots of ideas. What ideas may have been deemed “too risky” in the past? Work through them (and talk about them with others) to decide on the one that will: a) be practical to implement next year, b) impact your organization, and c) serve as inspiration for the association industry.
- Familiarize yourself with the existing literature on innovation. It helps to understand what’s been done and what the trends are now. How do you see your organization expanding the conversation about the innovative methods associations are using to pursue their goals and achieve success?
- State how you defined “innovation.” Be sure to align your goals and objectives with your definition.
- Think about the overall impact of your submission. Is it well-written? Does it make sense? Is it practical?
- Clearly state the need or issue your project addresses and describe how your project will have an impact on that need/issue. Explain how you will apply the outcome of the project. Define how you will measure success.
- Think about how the concept of the project is transferable to other organizations and other industries and address this in your proposal. We see many ideas that would be meaningful for a specific organization but are not transferable to other types or organizations or industries.
- Include a clear, concise, informative timeline for anticipated project activities. Be sure it is realistic.
- Clearly state how/why the $10,000 you receive from the grant will make a difference to your work. What will the funding enable you to do that you could not do otherwise?
- Describe the long-term effects of your project. How will this project foster a culture of innovation within your organization during the grant year and afterward?
- Share your proposal abstract with a colleague or friend, and make sure they are able to identify the key points you want to convey and how your goals will be accomplished.
American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA)
The Industrial Hygiene Professional Path
When they present at career days around the country, industrial hygiene (IH) and occupational environmental health and safety (OEHS) professionals are challenged to capture the attention of high school and college students. For years, the volunteer groups at the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) have struggled to put together an informative and interesting way to showcase their incredibly important careers. IH/OEHS professionals are primarily technically minded people with a variety of highly valued skillsets. They are the silent heroes who keep moms and dads, sisters and brothers, spouses and children safe from workplace dangers.
Last year, AIHA rolled out the first phase of a new way to introduce IH/OEHS careers to teen students and college undergrads. By taking elements common to roleplaying and video games and turning them into relatable avatars, AIHA created fictional characters (based on real-life IH professionals) who represent various stages of an IH/OEHS career and who highlight two of AIHA’s three defined “knowledge tracks”—the IH Professional Pathways.
The IGP award will contribute to the project’s second phase. Phase II will provide more tools that will aid in continued outreach, but also increase overall career development and member engagement and raise general public awareness. The tools AIHA is exploring include an on-the-job documentary series, interactive video courses, and comics and animations that further explain the profession to new and potential users. By highlighting the opportunities available in IH/OEHS—as well as the career support AIHA provides—these tools will engage both current AIHA members and the members of the future.
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
Creating a Knowledge Sharing Platform to Accelerate Innovation in Accounting and Finance
One of the AICPA’s most vital goals is providing knowledge to accounting professionals to excel and protect the public interest. Based on this goal, the AICPA Innovation team has a vision to create a knowledge sharing platform—similar to TED Talks—for global accounting and finance professionals to spread innovative ideas. This platform, called IdeaAcct, will connect thought leaders all around the world, showcase innovation opportunities to lead the accounting profession to the future, create transparency, and enable coordination for the accounting and finance bodies to act uniformly to protect the public interest. IdeaAcct will be in an event/conference form, with the recordings of talks available on an online platform. Since building this platform is a grandiose project and requires a myriad of resources, the innovation team proposes starting small and prototyping the project to learn and iterate, which will facilitate success at a larger scale.
AICPA will prototype IdeaAcct at their new, multidisciplinary conference, called ENGAGE, in Las Vegas in July 2017. The innovation team will create a campaign prior to the conference to encourage thought leaders to submit their innovative ideas to present at the conference. They will select up to five visionary speakers, all of whom will be recognized and rewarded.
Through this prototype, the innovation team intends to identify a thought leader network and the best channels and messaging to engage them, develop speaker facilitating and convening requirements, and define areas of interest and expertise related to innovation. AICPA believes this will be an invaluable learning experience to validate the case for creating IdeaAcct and scale it efficiently in later years.
Institute of Food Technologists
Go with Purpose Global Challenge: Elevating Student Engagement through Global Collaborations
The world population is expected to reach 9 billion by the year 2050. This will require innovative solutions to meet current and future challenges in ensuring a safe, wholesome, and plentiful food supply across the globe. The Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) believes students are a critical segment in identifying solutions and that their organization is optimally positioned to lead those efforts.
IFTSA’s project consists of a food innovation challenge in which global partner associations will select student delegates to attend the 2017 IFT annual event, IFT17. At IFT17, these students will be organized into teams, presented with a case study that is representative of a pressing global food issue, and challenged to develop solutions using the vast knowledge available through the event’s 100+ scientific educational sessions and 1,000+ exhibitors at the Food Expo. The program will feature opportunities for students to interface with professionals who will mentor them on how to best access event resources to address the case study challenge. This intensive learning environment will give students a real-life laboratory to discover solutions, apply theory to practice, and ultimately understand how global collaboration will advance innovation in the science of the food marketplace.
National Court Reporters Foundation
Hard-of-Hearing Heroes Projects
The National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF) seeks to give voice to veterans with hearing loss by creating the Hard-of-Hearing Heroes Project. This project will capture the poignant stories of America’s war veterans with hearing loss for the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project (VHP). This new program combines NCRF’s current work with VHP and the profession’s work for the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.
Hearing loss can make it difficult to interact with others, and, to aid in communication, some highly skilled stenographic court reporters with specialized training have developed a system to take down the spoken word and translate it to the written word through Communications Access Realtime Translation (CART). CART is recognized as an auxiliary aid by the Americans with Disabilities Act and provides those with hearing loss a verbatim transcript of live speech, including live events, classrooms, meetings, and more.
CART would even allow veterans with profound hearing loss to be interviewed for VHP with questions and answers appearing on a computer screen in front of the person in real time. While there are many oral history programs and veterans’ oral history programs, to NCRF’s knowledge, this project would be the first devoted to interviewing veterans with hearing loss. This is important because hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) are two of the most common service injuries, according to the Veterans Administration. As the population of veterans with hearing loss increases, so will the need for CART. This project will both showcase a service that improves the lives of those with hearing loss and preserve these veterans’ experiences for posterity and research.
The Endocrine Society — Hormone Health Network
The Endocrine Society’s grant project will enhance the understanding of the intricacies of the endocrine system and related conditions by creating an interactive fly-through animation of the endocrine system that enables the user to take a hormone’s journey through the human body. The proposed initiative, “Hormonal Hot Spots” aims not only to educate the public on the endocrine system, but to increase the awareness of the state of endocrine-related diseases in the US. Beyond the Society’s core membership of scientists and healthcare professionals, this initiative is also designed to assess the educational needs of policy, industry, media professionals, patients, caregivers, and advocates.
In addition to offering a web-based version, The Endocrine Society will develop a mobile-friendly application in order to facilitate physician-patient communication. Further, the use of these applications in educational settings would increase the awareness and understanding of the importance of the endocrine system and its pivotal role in holistic health and wellness. The mobile application will be launched during the Society’s centennial celebration at their annual meeting, ENDO 2016 (April 1-4, 2016).
The project will provide an innovative model of education that focuses on dynamic interaction and knowledge integration. In addition, by highlighting epidemiology, health economics, and trends data within the breadth of endocrine diseases and related conditions, this program advocates for the importance of endocrine research and clinical care.
NAFSA: Association of International Educators
During the 2016 grant year, NAFSA intends to design and build the first iteration of a personalized learning and career development program, the International Education Competencies Assessment and Career Planner. Their project goals include researching technology options; validating market demand; mapping professional development content; creating competency based job profiles; and designing and testing the first iteration of the program. Intended outcomes include identifying an affordable technology solution; confirming market demand and capacity to pay for the product; cataloging NAFSA’s professional development portfolio by the competencies; creating and testing competency profiles of the most common roles in the field; and creating a business plan for program. If the results of this research indicate both demand and an appropriate technology solution, NAFSA will then proceed to designing and user-testing pilot version of the program.
Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance
The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance (The Alliance) plans to develop and implement a nationwide initiative to increase the availability of kidneys for transplant by improving processes to decrease kidney wastage among donation and transplant organizations. Nationally, there are more than 101,000 people waiting for kidney transplants and due to inefficiencies in donation and transplantation processes, over the past eight years, 20,000 kidneys have been discarded. Innovative interventions are necessary to reduce the number of kidneys lost.
The Alliance’s objectives for this initiative are to:
- Identify nationally collected data points to determine an appropriate measure of kidney utilization and kidney wastage.
- Identify replicable strategies to minimize kidney wastage from high performing Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) and transplant programs.
- Create a national and collaborative initiative to adopt the recommended strategies for a testing phase.
- Measure the impact on the number of kidneys transplanted and wasted.
By successfully completing these objectives, The Alliance will be well positioned to share and replicate the findings with the entire donation and transplantation community through national, regional and local conferences and other Alliance publications and communications. The result of this initiative will ultimately save and heal more lives because fewer kidneys will be discarded as a result of identifying the high performers and learning from their success. The success from this initiative can then possibly be expanded to help reduce other lifesaving organs from being discarded.
Sports Turf Managers Association
At what point does a sports field playing surface become unsafe for the young and amateur athletes who use it? This is the most asked question of field managers and by field managers -- and one that does not have an answer, yet. The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) will use their IGP grant to explore developing an algorithm-based app to answer this question.
If the results of this exploration indicate that this app can be developed, it would dramatically change the profession. Injuries due to unsafe surfaces would virtually disappear. Risk and liability to employers and field owners would be lowered. Budgets would be driven by facts, not “make-do”, and amateur athletes could continue to pursue their dreams without fear of a field-related injury. In addition to the goal of safer fields, three specific benefits would be accorded to STMA and its members: 1) growth in membership in STMA because to obtain this new technology, the field manager must be a member of STMA; 2) respect for the STMA member as the authority on field safety because the app will set the standard, and the sports turf manager will be the go-to person for this information; and, 3) its development will drive innovation within the industry.
STMA will access its subject matter experts in field construction and management, topography, climate/weather, fertilization, pest management, agronomy, and plant/soil sciences to determine if all of the variables that impact field surface conditions can be identified. The second piece of this project involves determining if meaningful information can be collected about the number of games, practices and events held on fields and the corresponding injury rates. The final piece is to determine if a mathematician can develop an algorithm for a software developer to create an app. Even if the project proves unfeasible, STMA will share the new data this project generated with its membership to help them with their field management practices.
American Library Association
While many associations, including the American Library Association, currently utilize some form of crowdsourcing for specific aspects of their work – conference program selection, for example –
crowdsourcing (where services, ideas, or content are collected from a large group of people often connected via the internet) and crowdfunding (where a project is funded by a large group of people, again, often online) have not been used extensively to expand the value of association membership.
Because crowdsourcing helps reinforce community and provides new and different opportunities for engagement, its successful use by associations could create new incentives for membership. It could be particularly important for new and emerging generations of members that value task-oriented participation over traditional committee-structured participation. Additionally, if association-sponsored crowdsourcing proves a viable path towards quickly and responsibly innovating within a profession, it might help reinforce associations’ roles as the responsible stewards of professional practice for the public’s interest. Finally, the data and indicators from crowdsourced initiatives could be used by staff to better develop services and respond to members.
The American Library Association seeks an exploration grant to help determine how associations might use crowdsourcing for peer-vetted creative production, mobilizing members to submit innovative solutions to problems in their field and leveraging the wisdom of the crowd to point to the most viable solutions. For the purposes of this project, the crowdsourcing space will be promoted as a place for librarians to suggest innovative programs and services and for peers to evaluate, rank and comment on proposed innovations. The goal within the space will be to incubate and improve innovative programs or services, to responsibly develop innovations that conform to shared values and standards of the profession, and to provide broad-based support for innovators to launch their ideas within their communities.
This project would allow the American Library Association to bring an innovative and timely approach into existing member services. It builds on traditional methods of member engagement, but allows for more flexible participation and contribution. With a multitude of conversations happening across the association and profession, library innovators and entrepreneurs plant new ideas for programs and services in any one of a number of disconnected forums. This project will help centralize those conversations and organize a supportive network for fostering innovation, by empowering the crowd to determine the most viable innovations. By building a dedicated space for crowdsourcing innovation, this project will help build communities of members interested in innovation broadly or in specialized areas of innovation. The communities would include those who can generate ideas, those who can contribute to refining those ideas, and those who can support and sustain the innovative ideas.
Arizona Community Action Association
The Arizona Community Action Association (ACAA) proposes to launch a statewide Living Wage Initiative. Raise Arizona will increase the quality of life for residents by raising the wages workers earn, lowering the number of individuals and families experiencing poverty, decreasing the need for social services, and raising the overall economic health of the state.
Raise Arizona recruits, certifies, and rewards businesses and employers that presently pay or commit to pay a living wage. Currently, the living wage in Arizona is $14.88/hour; the amount a worker must earn to afford basic expenses without needing additional public assistance.
By going beyond traditional service models that support people unable to meet their basic expenses, Raise Arizona innovatively addresses the root problem by increasing income and eliminating the need for public assistance. In addition, Raise Arizona drives consumer support and dollars to Living Wage Certified Businesses in reward for their commitment to pay employees a living wage and their contribution to the overall vitality of the community in which they do business.
Drawing from multiple fund sources, including ASAE’s Innovation Grant, ACAA will build the foundation for the Raise Arizona initiative. The initiative will be long-term and self-sustaining through application fees and membership dues. First year outcomes for the initiative are to:
1. Develop the Raise Arizona brand, including marketing materials and website.
2. Hire one staff member to lead ongoing business recruitment and community outreach.
3. Launch Raise Arizona and recruit 50 business and employers.
By successfully completing these first year outcomes, Raise Arizona will be well positioned to build upon our success and continue to impact the economy and Arizona. Our outcomes will allow consumers to actively recognize and engage in the initiative by supporting certified businesses. Through Raise Arizona, customers lift up businesses, businesses lift up families, and families lift up the economy.
California Association of Health Facilities
We are excited to propose the development of a mobile phone application (app) dedicated to helping nursing home leaders manage a coordinated response to natural or man-made disasters that impact medically-challenged seniors in skilled nursing homes.
Nursing homes in California are licensed healthcare facilities equipped to care for people with complex medical conditions. Facilities typically house 100 residents who are confined to a bed or unable to walk on their own. Many residents suffer from dementia and have trouble communicating. Others may be recovering from a stroke, or are admitted for short-term rehabilitation following surgery. During a natural or man-made event/disaster, special challenges arise for this vulnerable population, especially during the first critical hours when the power may be out or an evacuation is necessary.
The “Nursing Home Disaster Response Mobile Application” will allow for a rapid coordinated emergency response. This life-saving coordination tool can result in better outcomes for more than 300,000 elders who reside in California skilled nursing centers each year.
Specifically the app will provide nursing home leadership with the necessary tools to implement emergency operation plans, follow disaster response policies and procedures and access critical contact information to respond to a life-threatening emergency.
During an event/disaster – including power outages, floods, pandemics, earthquakes, wildfires or armed intruders – nursing home leaders may need access to emergency responders, relocation contacts, transportation vendors, medical records and critical staff. These leaders will need to assess the situation and make important decisions including whether to evacuate or shelter-in-place. The Nursing Home Disaster Response Mobile Application will enable administrators and other facility leadership to direct emergency response activities from an off-site location, including home, automobile or even from the parking lot of a facility following an unexpected evacuation.
The California Association of Health Facilities Disaster Preparedness Program (CAHF-DPP) has already developed several unique workbooks, education and training and a new command structure to assist members in emergency response efforts. Building on that success, the CAHF-DPP proposes to contract with a developer to create a prototype app and evaluate its usefulness in the areas outlined above. The app would be tested at member facilities during a staged disaster drill. Following the exercise, CAHF will survey participating staff to assess the usefulness of the tool and use analytics to determine which app functions were especially suitable. The app will then be re-tested in another setting utilizing additional CAHF members.
The need for better disaster response within the nursing home community serving this frail population has never been greater. As hospitals push to shorten expensive acute-care stays and move patients into cost-effective skilled nursing settings, nursing homes need to be ready to respond to any emergency events that may occur. If the Nursing Home Disaster Response Mobile app proves to be a practical, affordable tool, our ultimate goal would be to share the app (template) with other nursing home/assisted living associations for use nationwide.
PCMA Education Foundation
As the meetings, conventions, events and trade show industries continue to fuel economic growth around the world, planners and suppliers alike are working to put that financial power to good use with donations and service projects to benefit local communities. It is becoming a best practice to conduct charitable activities during a large corporate meeting, as an extension of a company’ s corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment. As the number of meetings that incorporate charitable components into their programs continues to increase so, too, does the impact of the $1.83 million corporate and business meetings, trade shows, conventions, congresses, incentive events and other meetings that take place in the U.S. This represents $280 billion in economic value as reported by the Convention Industry Council’s 2012 Economic Significance Study.
To help support and further catalyze this emerging and powerful trend, we propose the development of a standardized measurement system to capture the value generated by community engagement activities.
Given the working title of the CSR Evaluator (the Evaluator), the purpose of this undertaking is to:
• ENCOURAGE INCREASED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT among corporate meeting planners, by demonstrating the social (and business) value that results from such CSR events;
• PROMOTE MORE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT STRATEGIC AND SOCIALLY IMPACTFUL
ACTIVITIES, by identifying best practices and sharing them broadly throughout the sector; and
• INCREASE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT by educating key stakeholders – such as mayors, government leaders, community members, and convention industry – about the impact of volunteerism in their local community.
The Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and Points of Light (POL), a collaborative partner with PCMA, propose the development of the CSR Evaluator, a user-friendly, web-based evaluation tool. Meeting planners (or their designated project activation partners), will be able to utilize the Evaluator to calculate the social impact of the community service project(s) conducted during their convention or meeting. True Impact, a boutique consultancy and software company that specializes in measuring the social, financial, and environmental impacts of community and CSR investments, is the third partner.
CSR Evaluator will be made available to ALL organizations with an interest in measuring the impact of CSR/charitable activities. The rollout will begin with the Convention Visitor Bureaus located in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.
Illinois Homecare & Hospice Council
A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to Enhance Member Engagement and Credibility on a Topic of National Concern
The Illinois Homecare & Hospice Council (IHHC) is currently working with the award-winning online learning center at the University of Illinois-Springfield, the Illinois Hospital Association, and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine to offer a high quality Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on “Best Practices to Reduce Hospital Readmissions through Care Coordination.” While the program modules will target members of IHHC and the Illinois Hospital Association who work in hospital, home care and hospice settings, as well as nursing home colleagues, the free MOOC will be widely available — to anyone anywhere.
By showcasing groundbreaking work done by physicians at several Illinois medical schools working with local hospitals and by sharing best practices developed by members of our professional association, the project developers will encourage the kind of education and networking that has been largely missing between the medical “silos” that care for patients. The MOOC will also foster the kind of learning and networking needed to establish “cross continuum caretaking teams” – much needed in the New Health Age. It will not only bring added credibility to the partnering organizations, it will serve as a reminder that when college educated adults need further training, professional associations can present competent and creative solutions.
Marble Institute of America
Innovation through Industry Collaboration for Statistics & Benchmarking
With their IGP award, the Marble Institute of America (MIA) will develop, prototype, test and evaluate the interest and value of bringing multiple industry segments together to meet member needs, taking both MIA and the industry in a new direction. As part of their project, MIA will develop a website portal where members can obtain key industry statistics and benchmarks in one place, and they’ll create an industry blog to keep the members and partners updated and informed. MIA will also participate in multiple presentations at industry trade shows, chapter events, and online forums to share and discuss their data. Internally, a new steering committee and workshop training for staff, the steering committee, and stake holders will help MIA shift to pursue these innovations.
The project centers on establishing benchmarking data and presenting that data to the industry, but the big picture goal is to connect and engage the stone industry in a meaningful discussion for the common good. The stone industry is mostly comprised of small-to-medium-size family business without the means to assemble this information on their own, so MIA is proactively moving to assemble and provide the data and foster conversations that advance the industry.
Soroptimist International of the Americas
LiveYourDream.org — Expanding our brand to meet activists online!
Soroptimist International of the Americas (SIA) plans to energize the Soroptimist brand and increase global awareness of one of its programs by expanding a new innovative online community called Live Your Dream (LYD). LYD is a recently-launched dedicated community of supporters who take both on- and offline action in support of Soroptimist programs that empower women and girls to achieve their dreams.
LiveYourDream.org was founded as a new entry point for people who wanted to support and participate in the mission without the barriers of club membership. LYD got off to a great start in its first year, but through IGP funding, SIA will seek to increase the number of LYD supporters engaged through social media, increase the number of advocacy opportunities available, increase awareness of the LYD community, and increase awareness of and engagement with SIA programs more broadly through new partnerships, better relationships with constituents, and the recruitment of new supporters.
Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity
Better In/Better Out
Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) was awarded a hybrid grant to implement Better In/Better Out (BIBO), a multi-faceted initiative designed to generate new ideas, develop processes to support innovation within TKE, and enhance communication across all levels of the organization. TKE is comfortable with innovative thinking but is now concerned with new and better ways to channel ideas and conversations into actionable strategies – thus the title “Better In/Better Out.”
As part of their project, TKE will pursue inputs from external organizations outside of the fraternity market, colleagues in other fraternal organizations, and undergraduate leaders within the TKE fraternity through site visits to innovative leaders and TKE-hosted events. TKE staff will be trained in intentional learning and in how to apply what they learn in new contexts. TKE will engage staff at all levels in different ways in the process of developing ideas, evaluating potential projects, and implementing new innovations. The end goal is an internal dialogue at TKE that will create positive momentum, increase morale, and spark meaningful change.
Association of American Medical Colleges
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) had four elements to their IGP proposal: advancing additional networking with innovation experts, experimenting with a design-thinking workshop, improving their capacity for associating by attending an innovation-focused event, and observing their membership to better understand and address their members’ needs. With funding awarded through IGP, AAMC staff attended meetings and conferences specifically geared toward innovation. Upon returning, the attendees quickly introduced new ideas designed to foster collaboration and exchange among staff. Staff also participated in a design-thinking workshop that led to the creation of a new model of engagement and exchange with AAMC members about products and services. Through this process, and through observing member organizations in action, AAMC intends to build a better understanding of their members’ needs and how to serve them.
AAMC used the grant funding to find new ways to engage staff with their organization and ideas about innovation. Contests for travel grants disbursed as part of the IGP award invited staff to be creative with their ideas and their proposals. AAMC staff came together to view and vote on the proposals to choose a winner for one of the grants. The contests opened up opportunities to learn about innovative ideas to all AAMC staff.
Through their IGP grant, AAMC experienced how engagement and networking can drive innovation in an organization. By engaging their staff in their innovation efforts, AAMC built interest and commitment to innovation within their offices. Through their networking efforts with AMI and others, AAMC increased organizational knowledge and helped expand a community of innovators.
Center for the Future of Museums, American Alliance of Museums
With the grant received through IGP, the Center for the Future of Museums (CFM) developed, tested, and evaluated a digital badging system. Digital badging is a system by which an organization offers “credit” in return for the demonstration of some accomplishment by the user, whether the completion of an educational module or participation in a related event. CFM’s pilot program ran from early 2013 to the end of that year and allowed two test groups of users to earn credit and recognition for mastering content in small topic areas. Altogether, CFM created five badges, one for each level of content and one for mastering all levels.
CFM collected extensive feedback from these participants and other advisors on the online content. Through the feedback and their internal experiences, CFM created recommendations to guide the incorporation of digital badging into the Alliance’s professional education program, as well as evaluating how CFM might improve this particular badging course for future iterations. The experience invited reflection on the implications of the project not only for their organization but also for the entire association community. Digital badging, or some similar form of microcredentialing, is an opportunity associations will need to consider if/as the trend endures. Associations who move forward with digital badging will need to decide what to credential and what determines the completion of the requirements. The success of digital badging is also inevitably tied to building “brand” value associated with the credentials and the recognition of microcredentialing more broadly.
Colorado Nonprofit Association
With the money received from the Innovation Grant Program, the Colorado Nonprofit Association created an online assessment system and toolkit to help members determine how to improve their processes. The site they built, called Opus, allows members to compare their data to benchmarked data, reinforces the best practices outlined in Colorado Nonprofit Association’s Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence in Colorado (P&P), and links users to resources that take a more in-depth look at these practices.
Opus was launched April 1, 2014 and response has been extremely positive. Several new members joined the Colorado Nonprofit Association specifically for access to Opus. The Association was also able to secure sponsors for Opus to offset the ongoing support costs. Next up for Opus and the Colorado Nonprofit Association is the launch of the full assessment system in spring 2014.
International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking
For their proposal, the International Association of Diecutting and Diemaking (IADD) developed a program called “Think! Outside the Box” (Think!). Think! was designed to overcome distance and financial constraint to bring IADD’s members together, start conversations, exchange ideas, and foster innovation among members, staff, the association, and the industry. Think! would accomplish this by using video and Wi-Fi technology to remove the barriers inherent to gathering a geographically diverse association membership. As the program was implemented, the program components shifted to address the needs of IADD and its membership, taking the program in unexpected but successful directions.
With the grant award, IADD purchased several tablets, Wi-Fi hotspots, conference cams, and other equipment/software to support the production of videos and remote conferencing by IADD staff and members. To make these tours available to IADD members, IADD built a Think! media website that currently hosts four video tours to showcase their members’ companies. More videos will be added as they are formatted and approved.
IADD’s key takeaway was that investment in innovation not only unlocked a creative approach that addressed several challenges, but the equipment remains an investment that can be creatively deployed to take advantage of other opportunities. It also underscored the need for even small organizations to take risk and “invest in ourselves and more fully utilize technology to stay fresh and deliver new products and services.”
